The lemon peel stitch is the perfect starting stitch for any crochet beginner. It utilises just single crochets and double crochet stitches (US terms) to create this gorgous texture which works up pretty fast.
This stitch is also known as the Griddle stitch. Not to be confused with the Suzette (or Thicket) stitch which is very similar. You can find my tutorial for the Suzette stitch here.

- I have used a 6.0mm crochet hook with Paintbox Simply Chunky yarn in the colour pale lilac. You can use any combination of yarn and hook for this pattern
Abbreviations

- Ch – Chain

Pattern
This pattern is a one row repeat. The turning chain does not count as a stitch.
Foundation row: Chain any number of odd stitches.
R1: Starting from the second chain on your hook, sc into the chain. dc into the next chain. Repeat *sc, dc* until the end of the row. ch1, turn.
R2: Make an sc into the very first stitch. dc into the next. *sc, dc* until the end of the row. ch1, turn.
Repeat R2 until your project is at the required length.

Helpful Tips

- When starting out, it can be quite easy to miss the last stitch. Stitch markers are great to mark the end of your row!
- Another way to ensure you haven’t missed the last stitch is remembering that every row should end with a double crochet.
- If you ever get confused with where the single and double crochets should go, remember that this is an alternating stitch pattern. That means that you should put a single crochet on top of every double crochet in the row below, and vice versa.
